Overview

The position is required to acquire and maintain an in-depth understanding of the needs of each outpatient oncology clinical and non-clinical area utilizing the BCC EMR (Cerner), as well as an in-depth understanding of the existing and possible EMR functionality.  This position will coordinate all BCC EMR “super users” to ensure that the same information is flowing to and from this group and their staff members.  This position will liaise with IT Dept’s Clinical Informaticists and others as needed, and will work closely with the BCC team including Pharmacy and others to provide input into the BCC’s utilization of the EMR, including opportunities for streamlining, improving workflow, patient safety and outcomes with best practices.   

 

This position will be responsible for working closely with the Cerner Oncology PowerChart team that will create new or modify existing chemotherapy regimens (approximately 450 to date) and other Cerner PowerPlans (approximately 700 to date).  This position will coordinate and test improvements in oncology-specific functionality and user training, eg., charge capture, documentation, scheduling, etc. 

 

This position, in collaboration with Oncology RN Educator, will be responsible for designing onboarding of new users in all relevant oncology disciplines (e.g., clinic RNs, RN Navigators, Social Workers, MAs, Study RNs, dietitians, chaplain, etc) for oncology-specific workflows and functionality, and providing re-training to users as needed.  This training and re-training will include communications regarding standardization of data, as is appropriate. 

 

Additionally, this position will liaise closely with BCC leadership to apprise them of opportunities for EMR improvement, as well as to be kept apprised of operational changes including, e.g., additions of clinic locations, additions of providers, etc.

 

This position will participate from time to time in outpatient oncology clinical area, to be determined by Exec Director based on experience of the incumbent.  While doing so, the position reports dotted line to the Manager or Director of clinical area in this responsibility, and is expected to follow professional oncology nursing standards and competencies in that area.

Responsibilities

  • Applies Oncology RN experience and insights into gaining and maintaining knowledge of clinical practices.
  • Assists individual Super Users with their needs.
  • Assists and collaborates with others in determining “best use” of EMR technology and functionality.
  • Recommends “best use” practices; works with individual area super users to gauge needs, ensure appropriate and consistent communications with all users in those areas.
  • Works cooperatively with IT (Clinical Informaticist and others), Outpatient Oncology Super Users, Oncology RN Educator, BCC leadership (provider and non-provider), and others.
  • Provides onboarding of new users in all outpatient oncology relevant areas (e.g., clinic RNs, RN Navigators, Social Workers, dietitians, MAs, etc) in oncology-specific EMR functionality and oncology workflows. Provides retraining of existing users in oncology-specific EMR as needed.
  • Participates from time to time in outpatient oncology clinical area, to be determined by Exec Director based on experience of incumbent. Qualifications

Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):

Graduation from an accredited/approved school of nursing

BSN preferred, must enroll or obtain degree within 2 years of hire.

Current unrestricted Kentucky license required.

OCN certification preferred.
