4West (Pulmonary Intermediate) is a 20-bed pulmonary intermediate unit that provides specialized nursing care for adult patients with complications of chronic respiratory disease including those suffering from cystic fibrous, tracheotomy, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary emphysema, pulmonary fibrosis and tother diseases affecting the lung.

 

 

The charge nurse assists the Clinical Manager and/or Nursing Director with the management of the unit including participating in employee evaluation, staffing and scheduling, patient and preceptor assignments, oversight of resource utilization, and initiating and overseeing quality improvement activities.  The charge nurse acts as a resource and provides information/education to unit staff.  The charge nurse is involved in service recovery, promoting customer service to both internal and external customers.  The charge nurse is a role model and proponent of the professional nurse as exemplified by their presence on the unit, participation in nursing department initiatives such as the acquisition of Magnet Certification, and organizational committee meetings. 

Responsibilities

  • Participates in assessing and cost-effectively meeting staffing needs and resource utilization within the budget of the department of the unit; confers with unit nursing leadership when making preceptor/nurse assignments; assigns patients and tasks according to staff expertise and patient acuity and assumes responsibility for functioning of the unit on a shift-to-shift basis
  • Serves as a role model for staff regarding customer relations, monitors unit customer service and intervenes as necessary; rounds on internal and external customers based on unit requirements
  • Participates in employee evaluations, counsels and coaches employees when necessary, and implements disciplinary process according to policy including time and attendance issues; remains knowledgeable of regulatory standards and ensures staff are maintaining and adhering to all department and facility policies; maintains anecdotal documentation.
  • Participates in the review and investigation of occurrence reports; intervenes and develops action plans for actual events and near misses and shares the results with staff
  • Acts as a clinical resource and may assist with education and may dispense education for staff as needed.; may be responsible for interviewing, scheduling, expediting patient flow, promoting efficiency within the unit and management of productivity
  • Identifies personal goals and actions to meet the unit and organizational goals
  • Efficiently and effectively monitors supply use to meet patient needs
  • Collaborates and contributes to revision of policies and procedures
  • Participates in quality improvement by identifying, in collaboration with nurse managers, two to three (2-3) quality improvement initiatives annually; may be responsible for meeting unit audit requirements.
  • Participates in an annual charge nurse competency
  • Maintains open communication with all health care team members, nursing leadership, and medical staff, especially with Nursing Director, Unit Managers and other Charge Nurses
  • Conducts or participates is unit meetings, committee meetings, and facilitates active participation of staff members
  • Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct
  • Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education:

  • 2 years RN experience required. BSN preferred
  • Credentials in specialty area (preferred)

Experience:

  • Two (2) years of patient care experience in specialty area (preferred)

 

Licensure:

  • Active Kentucky Registered Nurse License or compact license with privileges to work in Kentucky (required)

 Certifications: 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required)
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (preferred)

Note: additional, specialized certifications may be required or preferred based on unit
