Job Summary

The Quality Specialist is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the initial and ongoing training of pre-analytical staff. This may include as assigned selected non-laboratory staff who may be performing phlebotomy roles. They will assist with the creation of training curriculum and competency checklists. This includes maintaining records for training and competency, monitoring progress, and providing feedback to phlebotomist being trained.

The candidate will work closely with the phlebotomy supervisor while monitoring employee development and identifying opportunities for improvement. They will provide input for employee performance appraisals, and competency assessments. This individual may be involved in the interview/hiring process by providing assessment of candidate’s technical skills.

May be required to provide patient phlebotomy in the event there is no need for active training, or to maintain self-competency and expertise.

 

Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the phlebotomy supervisor, this position will:

  • Develops staff training plans based on standard work based on best practices that ensure patient safety and compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Promotes culture of safety for patients through training about proper patient identification, and prevention of medical errors. 
  • Assures phlebotomist are competent by performing direct observation and receiving feedback from peer trainer phlebotomists. Maintains documentation of direct observation and re-training for failure to follow standard work.
  • Perform training audits and validate cycle times utilizing standard work.
  • Provides staff in services related to phlebotomy, customer service, etc.
  • With supervisor determines the readiness of a phlebotomist to serve asa peer trainer/mentor to a new member or team member in need of further training. Perform training for peer trainer to assume a training role. 
  • Assures peer trainers are following laboratory protocols and procedures. 
  • Reports on peer trainer/trainee success with laboratory protocols.
  • Meets with phlebotomist peer trainers/trainees weekly to provide training guidance/assistance.
  • Monitor and document phlebotomist adherence to standard work, this will require the Quality Specialist to work varied shifts.
  • In the phlebotomy supervisor’s absence, the Quality Specialist may be designated supervisor
  • Conducts question/answer sessions to troubleshoot or resolve concerns.
  • Communicates regularly with supervisor about phlebotomist’s progress and performance.
  • Develops and posts a training schedule for peer trainer/trainee.
  • Utilizing quality metrics initiates process improvement to improve preanalytical processes.
  • Assess all aspects of phlebotomist’s trainee’s professional conduct.
  • Communicates with internal and external customers in a timely and professional manner.
  • Performs AIDET training and conducts AIDET audits.
  • Collaborate with the Laboratory Quality Manager to ensure pre-analytical staff training and competency is aligned to meet lab and hospital quality goals.
  • Monitor and document whether staff are meeting initial, 30-day, 60-day, 90-day, and 6-month goals and expectations.
  • The Quality Specialist is expected to attend educational opportunities related to pre-analytical laboratory functions.
  • Accepts responsibility for actions and results.

 

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED
  • 3 years of phlebotomy, 2 years of specimen processing
  • Phlebotomist (American Society for Clinical Pathology) or equivalent Certification
  • CPR/BLS

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Some College
  • 5 years of in-patient and out-patient phlebotomy
