Overview

The Vascular Access Educator will work collaboratively to facilitate training, education, and competency assessment for Vascular Access and other identified staff within the system.

Serves as the vascular access subject matter expert and assists in developing vascular access and IV therapy policies and protocols, based on current national standards of practice.  The Vascular Access Educator is responsible for coordination of training, education, professional development, and competency assessment for Vascular Access Nurse Specialists, and fills staffing needs as identified by departmental leadership.

Works under the direction of the Vascular Access Manager, the Vascular Access Educator works collaboratively with Nursing Education and System Vascular Access Staff to support vascular access competency and skill development.  Utilizes established structures and processes, supports goals and initiatives of System Vascular Access, Nursing Education and the UofL Health System.

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (required)
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing, Education, or Leadership (preferred)

Required Experience

  • Three to five (3-5) years as a Registered Nurse in acute care facility with demonstrated knowledge and experience of concepts of intravenous therapy including optimal vein use, vein preservation and difficult access placement (required)
  • 2+ years experience as a Vascular Access Nurse or closely related field, that includes primary responsibilities for assessment and placement of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) and use of ultrasound technology for vein identification and line placement.

Preferred Experience:

  • Previous experience in education and teaching
  • Previous experience in learning technologies, adult learning theory, program planning and management, competency assessment, project management, promoting and supporting change initiatives and formulation and evaluation of learning

Licensure:

  • Active Kentucky Registered Nurse License or compact license with privileges to work in Kentucky (required)

Required Certification:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA)(required)
  • Current Certified Registered Nurse Infusionist (CRNI) Certification or Vascular Access Board Certified (VA-BC) Certification
