The Vascular Access Educator will work collaboratively to facilitate training, education, and competency assessment for Vascular Access and other identified staff within the system.

Serves as the vascular access subject matter expert and assists in developing vascular access and IV therapy policies and protocols, based on current national standards of practice.  The Vascular Access Educator is responsible for coordination of training, education, professional development, and competency assessment for Vascular Access Nurse Specialists, and fills staffing needs as identified by departmental leadership.

Works under the direction of the Vascular Access Manager, the Vascular Access Educator works collaboratively with Nursing Education and System Vascular Access Staff to support vascular access competency and skill development.  Utilizes established structures and processes, supports goals and initiatives of System Vascular Access, Nursing Education and the UofL Health System.

Responsibilities

RN - Nursing Professional Development (NPD) 1 works collaboratively with leadership and the Professional Development Department to improve the quality of patient care and nursing practice, with associated patient and departmental outcomes. The NPD 1 accomplishes this through facilitation of clinical education, professional development, competency initiatives and direct clinical support activities. The NPD 1 is responsive to evolving educational needs within a specified department, and serves as a clinical expert, learning facilitator, consultant, change agent, leader and interprofessional collaborator in a specific area of responsibility. Collaborates to identify, develop and deliver educational programs for both individuals and groups in both clinical, classroom, and virtual settings. Fosters empowerment of staff by providing clinical instruction, and support to assure clinical competency of staff and safe, effective delivery of patient care. Incorporates evidence and appropriate skill set standards. The NPD 1 actively participates in quality improvement (QI) and EBP processes. The position supports core behaviors, standards, values, and missions of UofL Health, accrediting bodies, and the profession of Nursing as a professional role model.

 

Clinical Expert

  • Serves as a role model to nursing staff in the delivery of excellent patient care for designated patient populations
  • Serves as the vascular access and infusion services subject matter expert and assists in developing vascular access
  • and IV therapy policies and protocols, based on current national standards of practice.
  • Collaborates with Clinical Leadership to develop, evaluate, and implement standards of infusion and vascular access care /device planning and professional practice with attention to quality, service, cost effectiveness, comfort, safety, age specific implications, and cultural competence
  • Collaborates with nursing and interdisciplinary colleagues to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate strategies to address complex patient care issues
  • Assists staff with clinical decision making and priority setting
  • Collaborates with leadership to develop, evaluate, and implement standards of patient care / care planning and professional practice with attention to quality, service, cost effectiveness, comfort, safety, age specific implications, and cultural competence
  • Serves as a patient / family advocate, incorporating respect for and acknowledgement of cultural diversity and individual patient needs
  • Maintains and integrates current evidenced-based knowledge into educational programming
  • Promotes an environment consistent with the core concepts of Patient Centered Care, and demonstration of the core values

Learning Facilitator

  • Facilitates the ongoing education, competency and professional development of the nursing staff and students to meet competency requirements in accordance with departmental objectives and appropriate accreditation standards
  • Coordinates orientation of newly hired employees to specified department
  • Plans, prepares, and maintains materials for use in competency based educational programs, utilizing current standards, regulations, and evidenced based resources
  • Collaborates in the development or modification of patient education materials, as appropriate
  • Collaborates with stakeholders to assess learning needs for clinical staff, designs and implements programs and competency strategies to address identified learning needs
  • Incorporates principles of adult learning and evidence-based education in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of education and competency programs
  • Assists others in developing clinical reasoning skills
  • Participates in learning technologies via simulation, LMS, virtual classroom, and multimedia
  • Communicates effectively in visual, oral, and written form and demonstrates effective presentation skills
  • Facilitates initial provider and renewal courses for BLS, ACLS, PALS and/or NRP as appropriate for area
  • Challenges existing practice when not aligned with current best practices

Development of Self and Others

  • Maintains affiliation with professional organizations
  • Cooperates in the facilitation of departmental orientation and conducts a variety of in-service, orientation, and educational programs for vascular access staff and the infusion services team to meet competency requirements in accordance with departmental objectives and accreditation standards, including yet necessarily limited to: Initial and Ongoing Competencies; Core Curriculum; Required Certification Courses and Professional Development.

Qualifications

Required Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing from an accredited program (required)

Experience:

  • 3+ years as a Registered Nurse in acute care facility with demonstrated knowledge and experience of concepts of intravenous therapy including optimal vein use, vein preservation and difficult access placement (required)
  • 2+ years’ experience as a Vascular Access Nurse or related field, that includes primary responsibilities for assessment and placement of peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) and use of ultrasound technology for vein identification and line placement. (required)
  • Previous experience in education, teaching or professional development (preferred))

Licensure:

  • Active unrestricted Registered Nurse license in Kentucky (required)

Certification:

  • Current National Certification in clinical specialty, either Certified Registered Nurse Infusionist (CRNI) or Vascular Access Board Certified (VA-BC) (required, or must obtain within 6 months of hire)
  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider, other resuscitation certifications (Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Neonatal Resuscitation Program) based on area of clinical specialty (required)
