The Lead Medical Technologist shall have a thorough knowledge of Clinical Laboratory Science and the knowledge and skills to perform tests of high complexity, working with established procedures in multiple departments of the Laboratory. The Lead Technologist shall show good judgment with attention to detail as well as respect for patient rights to confidentiality. Work requires above average accuracy, and shall demonstrate competency in technical, critical thinking and interpersonal skills. They shall assist the Supervisor in maintaining laboratory standards in accordance with accrediting bodies, including but not limited to CLIA/CAP/JCAHO/HCFA and shall assist in oversight of the Laboratory Compliance Program, Medical Necessity and HIPPA. The Lead Technologist shall interact courteously and professionally with co-workers, medical staff, patients, visitors, and others. The Lead Technologist shall demonstrate the ability to perform several tests/tasks concurrently with accuracy and within established turn around times. The Lead will actively interface with all hospital personnel and Medical Staff to represent the Laboratory in a positive fashion. The employee shall actively support the policies of the Laboratory and hospital. Employee shall work in a clean, well lighted Laboratory, and shall participate in keeping it so.

Responsibilities


LIST OF THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS PERFORMED BY THIS POSITION

1. Performs supervisory duties for and provides leadership to the laboratory departments on 2nd and 3rd shift.

2. Assists with initial and annual employee evaluations 60 days in advance of due date (includes initial competency and skills assessment/validation). Evaluations shall be fair and constructive manner.

3.Performs and supports all Leadership Development Initiatives: Rounds effectively and consistently on all staff monthly. Practices AIDET and ensures compliance with staff. Writes at least two thank you notes per month. Assists with performance discussions with all direct reports at least every 6 months. Completes and submits to HR all 90 day meeting documentation for new hires. Prepares in advance to round with Supervisor.
4.Attends management meetings and other meetings on as need basis.
5.Communicates to staff consistently through individual rounding, staff meetings, and hospital email.
6.Provides support, as necessary, to ensure that accreditation standards are met for all sections and adheres to all regulatory, compliance and medical necessity guidelines.
7.Supports Laboratory and Hospital Management and uses the concept of managing up these people and positions to staff. Is prepared and accessible for Senior Rounding in Department.
8.Completes all education requirements in addition to 8 hours of continuing education for self 60 days in advance of annual evaluation.
9.Assists with training and education to lab employees, students, residents, fellows and other employees.
10.Ensures compliance of self and staff with Infection Control and Safety Policies.11.
11.Writes and/or edits Policies and Procedures in compliance with Clinical Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines. Demonstrates comprehension of all procedures within the department as defined in the Procedure Manuals; ensures staff comprehension. Reviews Manuals annually, revises procedures as necessary.
12.Maintains technical skills in the Core Cell and works as necessary.
13.Assists with direct observation to ensure staff perform processes correctly and in the standardized work manner.
14.Ensures equipment is properly maintained with appropriate documentation, and prepares work orders to repair broken equipment.
15.Monitors supply inventory to maintain adequate stock and communicates needs to appropriate person. Ensures staff follow the kanban process for inventory and ordering.16.
16.Creates a culture of teamwork. Establishes and leads effective work groups and teams
17.Interfaces with other departments in a collaborative, professional manner and works closely with Supervisors.
18.Promotes customer service excellence by responding quickly to inquiries/requests by researching and resolving internal and external questions.

19. Assists with time and attendance functions.
20. Leads team huddles on 2nd/3rd shift(s).
21. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science or in a related science (example, laboratory sciences such as chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, hematology, clinical microscopy, cytogenetics, blood bank, molecular biology, cytotechnology, or immunology. (required)

Certification:

  • Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist by one of the following accrediting agencies is required.
    • Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
    • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
    • Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the American Medical Technologists (AMT)
    • Medical Laboratory Scientist certified by the American Medical Technologists (AMT)
    • Medical Technologist (MT) certified by the Department of Health, Education & Welfare/US Department of Health & Human Services (HEW/HHS)
      • Technologist certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) in one of the following areas:

      Blood Bank, Chemistry, Hematology, Cytogenetics, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or Cytology

      • Technologist certified by the American Board of Bioanalysis (ABB) in one of the following areas:

      Medical Technologist, Andrology Laboratory Scientist, Embryology Laboratory Scientist, or Molecular Diagnostics Technologist

      Beginning in January 2004, newly certified individuals must participate in The American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB) Board of Registry (BOR) Certification Maintenance Program (required)
