Overview

The Chaplain Resident position is a limited, educational position in which the resident will learn by providing intensive and extensive spiritual care and counseling under clinical supervision to patients and their families as well as to hospital staff. The clinical and educational experiences during the residency program are designed to prepare residents for board-certification as a professional chaplain.

Responsibilities

LIST THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS PERFORMED BY THIS POSITION

 

1. Participates with staff chaplains in a clinical rotation that provides 24/7 spiritual care coverage within the hospital, working all shifts.

 

2. Assesses the spiritual needs and resources of patients, their families, and staff in his or her care.

 

3. Designs and implements spiritual care interventions for patients, their families, and staff based on assessment and with cultural sensitivity.

 

4. Documents assessment, interventions, and outcomes in the patient record.

 

5. Participates actively as a member of the interdisciplinary team.

 

6. Co-ordinates spiritual care for patients and their families in collaboration with staff chaplains and clergy and spiritual leaders in the community.

 

7. Utilizes the clinical method of learning through reflective reporting of clinical work and through self-evaluation.

 

8. Utilizes a range of skills in his or her clinical work, including listening/attending, empathic reflection, conflict resolution/confrontation, crisis management, and appropriate use of spiritual/religious resources.

 

9. Responds to ethical dilemmas of persons in his or her care or of staff as requested and/or as appropriate.

 

10. Makes referrals to members of the interdisciplinary team and/or to spiritual care providers in the community based on assessment and as appropriate.

 

11. Participates actively in all aspects of the educational program, including but not limited to group and individual supervision, assigned readings, reflective writing, and interdisciplinary learning activities.

 

12. Participates in the clinical orientation of chaplain interns.

 

13. Submits regularly reports of his or her clinical work as required by the residency curriculum and departmental policies.

 

14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

EDUCATION & TRAINING:
Master of Divinity or equivalent degree and one successfully completed previous unit of CPE

 

EXPERIENCE:
Pastoral experience in a healthcare setting preferred
