Overview

The sonographer is responsible for the independent operation of ultrasound equipment. The sonographer performs scans according to department guidelines and communicates results to the attending physician when appropriate.  The sonographer maintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self-motivated to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field and new procedures as they evolve.

Responsibilities

  • Review patient chart for physician order
  • Review patient history
  • Correlate patient history with exam to be performed
  • Prepare patient and equipment for appropriate exam
  • Perform the following ultrasound exams according to department guidelines and AIUM standards:

-1st, 2nd, and 3rd trimester OB exams, normal and abnormal anatomy scans, growth and limited scans

-Assessment of the female pelvis by transabdominal and transvaginal methods

-Monitor ovulation scans

                -Biophysical Profile Test

-Saline Infusion Sonogram

-Hysterosalpingoconstrastsonography

-Amniocentesis test

-Chorionic villus sampling

-3D evaluation

-Nuchal translucency measurements

  • Present scan to physician and communicate pertinent information regarding patient.
  • Disinfect probes according to guidelines
  • Schedule patients for follow-up appointments
  • Enter patient reports into reporting system
  • Check email daily to communicate with management and staff
  • Complete state inspection check off sheets monthly
  • Clean and stock exam rooms
  • Places service call for equipment failures and reports to management
  • Evaluate department schedules for scheduling conflicts
  • Present in a pleasant and professional manner at all times
  • Assist other staff when time allows
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • ARDMS or Graduate of a formal Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program or Cardiovascular Technology Program that is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) is required.
  • Registered ARDMS in OB/GYN within 9 months of hire date
  • Nuchal translucency certified within 6 months of hire date
  • CPR Certified
  • Complete and maintain PPD testing
  • Electronic Medical Record experience preferred
  • PAC and DR System experience preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Ability to effectively operate ultrasound equipment.
  • Ability to perform ultrasound exams according to AIUM standards.
  • Ability to use independent judgment to acquire the optimum diagnostic sonographic information in each examination performed.
  • Ability to communicate diagnostic information to the attending physician.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and health care team.
  • Ability to follow established departmental procedures.
  • Ability to work efficiently and cope with emergency situations

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Office environment – office, clinical ultrasound setting, sitting, computer, walking, lifting etc.
