Shift: Full Time, 1st Shift

 

About the unit

The Surgical Services Department at Jewish Hospital consists of the following three areas: Main Hospital; Heart Hospital; and Outpatient Care Center, which includes the Hand Care Center. Surgical Services is open 24 hours a day and 365 days a year to ensure all surgeries, including emergencies, are completed and the community’s health needs are met. Our service lines include Cardiothoracic, Vascular, Robotics, General, Colorectal, Urology, Transplant, Orthopedics, Neurosurgery, ENT, Dental, Plastics, Hands, and Oral Maxillofacial. In total, we have 30 operating rooms, 2 of which are considered Hybrid rooms equipped to perform endovascular, robotic, and cardiothoracic surgeries. Our staff take pride in offering excellent care to our patients, as well as their families.

Responsibilities

Job Summary:

A surgical technician is responsible for assisting the operating room team during operative procedures in accordance with internal standards and procedures.  Work includes arranging and inventorying sterile set-up for operations, passing items as needed to the operating team, assisting in the preparation and moving of patients, and in the clean-up of the operating room.  An incumbent carries out assigned activities under direct supervision and direction of a qualified practitioner.

  • Operating Room

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Assembles instruments, sterile supplies, and equipment specific to surgical procedures.
  • Scrubs for varied surgical procedures encompassing each surgical specialty and emergency procedures demonstrating versatility and competency while maintaining sterile technique and performing surgical counts.
  • Institutes cleaning, reprocessing, and storage of instruments and equipment.
  • Assists in transfer and positioning of patients as directed by surgeon or circulating nurse.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Graduation from an accredited surgical technician vocational or technical program/school.
  • Completion of a UofL Health surgical technologist program.
  • Completion of a hospital based surgical technologist training program. 
  • Graduates of a military training program in surgical technology.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association.
  • One year experience in operating room as surgical technician or clinical rotations at University Hospital.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • CST – Certified Surgical Technician
