Job Title: Cytotechnologist

The cytotechnologist must have extensive knowledge in preparing, staining and evaluating gynecological and non-gynecological material including fine needle aspirations.  Must be competent with assessing all material with a high level of accuracy.  Must show good judgement with attention to details as well as respect for patient confidentiality.  The cytotechnologist must work professionally and courteously with physicians, patients, guests and other employees.

Responsibilities

  1. Performs processing, staining and coverslipping of various types of cytologic material.
  2. Assists with fine needle aspiration and procurement, providing microscopic adequacy to physicians.
  3. Microscopic screening of Thinprep paps, conventional pap smears, and body fluids.
  4. Performs clerical duties including entering data into computers, answering phones, and distribution of reports.
  5. Maintain effective laboratory operations by rotating to cover other ULH system laboratory, to perform cytotechnologist task.
  6. Monitors quality assurance.
  7. Works with others in a professional and courteous manner.
  8. Assists with training and teaching of students, residents, and others.
  9. Completely and correctly screens and interprets cytologic specimens.
  10. Adjust, maintain, or create a ticket to maintain equipment.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):

 

Must fulfill one of the following requirements:

1) Must be a graduate of an accredited school of cytotechnology.

2) Prior to 9/1/1992 completed 2 years in an accredited institution and 12 months of formal cytology training from an approved school of cytotechnology.

3) Prior to 9/1/1992 achieved a satisfactory grade in an HHS proficiency test for cytotechnologists.

4) Prior to 9/1/1994 have 2 years’ full time experience or equivalent within the preceding 5 years examining slides under the supervision of a physician certified in pathology. Also 6 months’ cytology training and 2 years of supervised full time experience in cytology.

 

Graduate of accredited school of cytotechnology and bachelors degree preferred.

 

Cytology certification or eligible by an approved HHS agency (ASCP or IAC).

 

Individuals who are ASCP certified beginning January 2004 must participate in the BOR Certification Maintenance Program.

 

 

Experience (required and preferred):

 

3 years preferred but not mandatory.
