The Pathologists' Assistant (PA) acts as a primary provider of anatomic pathology services requiring specialized knowledge, practice, and expertise in describing, dissecting, and submitting samples of human surgical specimens as well as other procedures such as frozen sections and autopsy.

As a lead for the Pathologists’ Assistants, this position will provide support with quality and turn-around time metrics, workflow direction and improvement, adhering to regulatory guidelines and supporting inspectors during the inspection process, supply and equipment maintenance oversight and standard operating procedure update and development. The lead PA will be a resource for the training of new Pathologist Assistants, residents, students, and fellows as well as oversight of PA competency. The Lead PA will interact with and help instruct residents with grossing. In addition to serving as a practitioner, educator/role model, the lead PA must continuously interact and consult with the CLIA medical director, Anatomic Pathology leadership, faculty, and staff. Occasional coverage at various sites staffed by pathologists may be required.

It is expected that approximately 30% of this position is related to lead functions with remaining backfill to the bench. This expectation may increase or decrease depending on the needs at the time.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains readiness of equipment, supplies, and grossing areas and suggests new technology or products as appropriate.
  • Monitors quality metrics and Turn-around Time benchmarking and coordinates with manager to ensure metrics support and adhere to regulatory requirements.
  • Works cooperatively with supervisor, manager, and leads from other sections to ensure specimen requirements are met and maintained.
  • Completes all education and licensure requirements in advance of due date.
  • Ensures laboratory functions in assigned section are consistent with Hospital Compliance guidelines.
  • May provide technical direction, training, orientation and education to students, residents, fellows, new Pathology Assistants and other lab employees.
  • Maintains specimen identification integrity, performs gross examination and dictation of surgical specimens. Performs all functions expected of Pathology Assistants.
  • Writes, updates and/or is a technical advisor as needed for Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Observes all operating guidelines, standards, policies and procedures as outlined by the university, hospital, department, laboratory inspection and accreditation agencies, federal and state government.
  • Calibrates, conducts routine maintenance and troubleshoots laboratory/gross-room/morgue instrumentation, assists with maintaining the areas to standards which will meet all accreditation and regulatory requirements.
  • Collects tissue for tumor bank or research labs.
  • Participates in professional development activities.
  • Adjust shift and worked hours as appropriate to manage workflow.
  • Performs projects and other duties as assigned.
  • Maintains compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct.
  • Complies with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduate Level degree obtained from an accredited pathologists’ assistant program or appropriate medical level training.

Experience:

  • Frozen section, autopsy, and extensive grossing experience required.

Certification:

PA(ASCP) preferred, not required
