Job Summary: 

The Financial Counselor is responsible for financially securing all accounts by working with all patients who are referred for financial assessment which includes interviewing patients, providing estimated balances due and offering opportunities for payment.  By utilizing good customer service skills, the financial counselor will help the patient seek out medical assistance application, verify patient demographic and insurance information and collect appropriate payment before services are performed.  If satisfactory arrangements are not made the financial counselor will work with physicians’ offices, physicians, department directors, and management to determine whether services can be postponed until financial obligations can be met. The Financial Counselor has the responsibility for ensuring all accounts are evaluated and meet the University Center’s Financial Policy.

Responsibilities

  • Contact patients by phone and mail to communicate financial expectations prior to their receiving service at UMC. Uses databases to locate patients with bad addresses.
  • Establish patient files and organize follow-up plan. Initiate patient into the specialized data base for this purpose.
  • Communicate rescheduling of patients to Centralized Schedulers if financial expectations cannot be met when care is not urgent. Comments activity within hospital financial

system.

  • Communicate with doctors, doctors’ office staff, department directors, and management to ascertain if a patient’s care can be delayed until financial obligations can be met.
  • Ascertain when appropriate to refer patients to Medicaid eligibility vendor and make placement.
  • Assist patient with completing medical assistance applications.
  • Uses excellent customer service skills in every aspect of their work, both for internal customers and for external customers.
  • Collects the appropriate payment amount from patients who need to make financial arrangements. Calculate estimated payment requirement and negotiate appropriate payment schedule with patient.
  • Conducts financial interviews, either in person or by phone, with patients referred for financial counseling by staff. Also meets with self-referred patients.  Refers patients to vendors for Medicaid applications after performing a self-pay analysis for other payers. 
  • Provides estimates of costs of future services. Explains financial requirements to the patient or responsible party and collects deposits, deductibles, or coinsurance, as required.  Advises patients of balances due.  Negotiates patient payment arrangements within approved guidelines.  Documents all activity within standard commenting process.
  • Stays current with respect to changes in regulatory statutes, major insurance plans, deductibles, coinsurance, and non-covered services and state legislation. Demonstrates an understanding of insurance reimbursement, Medicaid eligibility, and any available patient financing programs.
  • Meets department goals for quality, productivity and patient satisfaction.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Excellent customer service skills required
  • Two years of relevant financial counseling or patient advocacy experience required
  • Excellent organizational, oral & written communication skills required
  • PC literacy, must be able to type 30 wpm with a 95% accuracy
