Job Summary:

The Monitor Technician is responsible for effectively monitoring patients on Central Station Telemetry in Critical Care Units. Monitors adult and geriatric patients and occasionally adolescent patients. Performs clerical duties under the direction of licensed nursing personnel. Applies proper and professional communications skills between personnel within the department and to other departments. Presents a personable and professional attitude to physicians, patients, families, visitors, and co-workers.

Responsibilities

  • Detects and identifies cardiac dysrythmias and/or life threatening arrhythmias and promptly communicates this information to the charge nurse and/or nurse assigned to that patient.
  • Maintains accurate records of telemetry strips. Ensures coverage of monitors at all times. Properly flags screen when patients are disconnected from monitors.
  • Maintains cleaning protocol for telemetry units and is accountable for proper storage and inventory of telemetry equipment. Reports malfunctioning equipment immediately.
  • Maintains patient records and ensures their readiness and availability for physicians.
  • Handles desk communications properly and promptly, including responding immediately to intercom, pages and routing of message to appropriate personnel.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Exhibits appropriate clinical competencies within unit secretary job description.

Qualifications

Education & Training:

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent (required)
  • Completion of course in telemetry monitoring with a score of 100% (required)

Experience:

  • Previous hospital patient care experience (preferred)

Certification:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) (required)
