Overview

The purpose of this role is to provide high quality electroencephalogram studies on patients throughout the hospital including, but not limited to, EMU, ICU and outpatients as requested. The role also requires the ability to monitor long-term EEGs (ICU and/or EMU) for abnormal activity and to take immediate steps to notify appropriate parties of the findings per hospital policy. The technician has a thorough knowledge and proficiency of his/her job and strives to provide the highest quality of patient/testing/care. The technologist is proficient in the care and diagnostic testing of Neonatal, (birth to discharge), Adolescents (12 - 17 years), Adult (18 - 65 years), Geriatric (66 years and older). The technician presents a pleasing professional manner to the patient, staff and visitors and maintains an open communication with the department and staff physicians. The technician supports and contributes to the department and hospital objectives/mission while adhering to all hospital and departmental policies and procedures. The technician will assist the Supervisor/Department Director with the orientation/training of new employees. The technician will continually strive for personal improvement and keep abreast of the changing modalities within the field. The technician will assist with administrative and secretarial duties as necessary.

Responsibilities

• Assess/prioritizes daily workload and communicates with peers to divide/prioritize workload.
• Evaluates patient testing needs per patient history and physician order. Maintains awareness of individual patient needs; contacts physician/patient floor for clarification of order if necessary.
• Measures each patient’s head using the International 10/20 system of electrode placement. Scrubs each electrode site using appropriate cleansing medium. Applies electrodes with appropriate medium. Checks impedance to assure impedance is <5 K Ohms. Records Impedance on recording.
• Aware of the specific age related EEG patterns associated with each age group: Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric.
• Aware of and makes use of special filters and paper speed settings for optimal enhancement of abnormalities.
• Recognizes artifacts, troubleshoots same and corrects in a timely fashion to produce a quality recording. Assures integrity of electrodes and recording system. Will monitor electrical brain activity to assure integrity of cable telemetry to mainframe computer system; can troubleshoot and correct cabling problems.
• Demonstrates proficiency in the performance of Evoked Potentials, SSEP, median and tibial, VEP and BAEP as well as EMU and continuous EEG monitoring.
• Follows appropriate sterilization/universal blood and body precautions.
• Completes appropriate documentation of study per departmental policy and procedures/Charges patient appropriately and in a timely manner. Performs patient assessment and records appropriately.    Assessment includes Physical assessment, Fall Risk, Skin Integrity, evidence of Abuse/Neglect and Pain assessment.
• Monitors EEG and video data continuously as assigned and follows procedures for notification of the nursing staff and physicians when abnormalities are detected.
• Works successfully as an integral part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team caring for each patient.
• Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
• Displays a positive professional image representing the department and the hospital.
• Comprehends new testing procedures and ideas easily and is able to incorporate these into the job description.
• Assists in the performance improvement activities of the department/takes an active role in determination of issues, seeks ways to bring about improvement.
• Assists departmental physicians/medical students in performance of patient testing as necessary.
• Attends/participates in departmental staff meeting. Offers helpful suggestions/input for betterment of department.
• Follows proper channels for communication of concerns/ideas.
• Follows and supports all hospital and departmental goals.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):

Required:

Maintains ongoing certification including required CEUs.
BLS required.

 

Preferred:

Associate degree in science or health related field.

ABRET certification or registered EEG tech.

 

Experience (required and preferred):

Preferred: 

• Minimum of 6 months performing EEG’s with experience in the performance of Evoked Potentials, EMU and/or Intraoperative Monitoring or 6 month’s experience as a Monitor Tech.
