Position: Director of Nursing
Job Summary
Responsible for inpatient nursing services of Frazier Rehab Institute (an acute inpatient rehabilitation facility), Nursing Clinical Education, and the Pulmonary Rehab services provided to both inpatients and outpatients at Frazier Rehab. This Director also provides oversight and guidance to the pediatric service line, facilitating the functioning of the Pediatric Program Coordinator and the Pediatric Nurse Navigator. For all areas of responsibility listed above, this position insures appropriate clinical and support staffing for the provision of services that meet inpatient rehab and outpatient regulatory requirements and patient needs. The Director provides the oversight and supervision for the department and directs the functions of the specific assigned managers for all employees under the position’s scope of responsibility. The Director is responsible for fiscal/budget management including the development of operational and capital budgets. The Director insures that staff education is consistent with the requirements of the various diagnostic groups to include both inpatient and outpatient regulatory compliance, and ensuring the delivery of efficient, competent, safe and effective care. This position is responsible for insuring that The Joint Commission and CARF accreditation standards are met for all areas related to the provision of nursing patient care and staffing. The Director of Nursing is responsible for monitoring and reporting quality measures that are comparable with other like rehab hospitals, driving performance indicators that will elevate the nursing care and position Frazier Rehab as a competitive regional and national provider.
The Director is responsible for the recruitment and retention of staff within the department and works collaboratively with both nursing and the HR Business Partner to identify trends and opportunities for staff development. The Director works collaboratively with the other Inpatient leaders to identify/develop facility goals and outcomes measures in accordance with industry quality metric standards. The Director establishes departmental goals and directs development of staff goals which support achievement of the facility and organizational goals. The Director networks with other system Nursing Leaders and provides assistance as needed. The Director networks with community representatives to further the reputation of Frazier Rehab Institute. The Director provides clinical guidance per their area of clinical expertise and works closely with Administration to promote smooth operations and prompt responsiveness to problems/concerns. The Director of Nursing is responsible for continuous evaluation of the department’s workforce, identifying future leaders, cultivating skills for succession planning, promoting the team’s individual development and overall development of increased clinical expertise among the nursing staff through credentialing, research and advanced study.
Planning and Organization: Plans and organizes the programs and operations of the department within the organization’s strategic plan and mission statement. Establishes departmental goals / objectives for each calendar year and implements strategies for their achievement.
Leadership and Teamwork: Serves as a resource to staff and other departmental directors. Maintains effective working relationships with members of the medical staff, other departments and affiliates. Works to create an environment that fosters individual respect and encourages employees to contribute their talent to the goals of Frazier.
Fiscal and Physical Assets: Manages the operation of all departments within the fiscal guidelines of the Frazier Institute Operational budget aligned with the Frazier Strategic Plan. Ensures the equipment and supply inventories are adequately maintained in order to provide for quality and continuity of patient care and/or services.
Leadership and Supervision: Provides leadership and effective personnel management, establishing a team that provides high quality services, promotes a positive work environment and the recruitment and retention of high quality staff. Promotes the development of specialty certified nurses to develop staff and increase professionalism.
Staffing and Productivity: Establishes staff schedules that ensure appropriate coverage and equitable distribution of work/overtime assignments and employee time off. Adjusts staffing to reflect activity and services according to hospital operations and productivity standards. Ensures staff education on expected productivity standards. Manages the nursing department recruiting, oversees the interviewing process by the unit/department managers, and participates in hiring and orienting of new employees as needed.
Quality Management: Develops mechanisms to ensure that the continuous quality improvement and quality resource management programs are maintained. Directs and monitors compliance with all safety, incident reporting, and infection control policies in all departments as they pertain to The Joint Commission and CARF regulations. Monitors outcomes of the department and routinely compares Frazier nursing performance against regional and national metrics.
Community Relations: Participates in Professional Practice organizations and Frazier and community activities, develops a network of professional colleagues, and promotes the image of Frazier Rehab Institute in the community and broader.
Department Specific: Establishes and manages educational opportunities for nursing and other students within the organization. Gives input towards system nursing policy and procedure changes. Participates in multi-disciplinary committees and/or task forces both within Frazier and within the system as requested by Administration. Maintains departmental personnel files.
