Job Summary

This position is responsible for managing, organizing, and coordinating the daily operations and staffing needs of the Health Information Management (HIM) Department to include Release of Information, Transcription, Chart Prep, Scanning, Indexing, Analysis, Chart Completion, and compliance with Joint Commission Record of Care documentation standards. Interacts as needed with internal customers to include but not limited to hospital staff, physicians and their offices, and other revenue cycle team members.  Actively participates in department and hospital performance initiatives and leadership activities when needed to ensure ULH success.

Responsibilities

  • Identify training development needs and plan and supervise appropriate training, education, in-services, and department orientation to new and existing employees to facilitate functional job competency.
  • Establish productivity standards, provide concurrent feedback on job performance, and routinely conduct quantitative and qualitative analysis of staff to monitor for compliance and ensure adherence to established workflow processes.
  • Maintains a working knowledgeable of CMS and Joint Commission regulatory standards, federal and state regulations, HIPAA/HITECH statutes, and facility and department policies regarding the storage, privacy, security, confidentiality, and release of patient protected health information (PHI).
  • Plan and facilitate employee engagement initiatives, and maintain high employee morale.
  • Assists with educating Attending and Resident physicians as needed to ensure improvement of and compliance with documentation standards.
  • Provides input on department budget, goals and objectives, HIM performance improvement plan as well as assists with maintaining overall compliance.
  • Effectively monitor documentation compliance with Joint Commission Record of Care Standards regarding the completeness, accuracy, legibility, etc., of patient medical records.
  • Assume responsibility for day-to-day direction of HIM Department in absence of Director as needed.
  • Model all Core Behavior standards, including routinely Rounding on staff.
  • Completes annual competency evaluations timely.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School education or GED required.
  • Must have and maintain either an AHIMA RHIA or RHIT credential.
  • 5 years of prior HIM operations and management experience, required.
  • Prior experience working as a privacy officer, a plus.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Demonstrate strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Demonstrates critical thinking, organizational, problem solving, multitasking, written and oral communication, time management, and leadership skills.
  • Must possess working knowledge of HIPAA/HITECH regulations.
