Job Summary:

The HIM Operations Educator provides role-based on-the-job, one-on-one refresher, and ongoing group education, training, and development as needed for all HIM operations team members. Develops and prepares comprehensive training materials, to include job aides and training curriculum and manuals for all HIM operations job functions. Utilizes team building and communication skills to facilitate training sessions that produce positive results. Supplies regular feedback to HIM Operations Manager on staff comprehension and assessment of mastery of job competencies as required. Works with HIM leadership to periodically review, update and/or revise education and training materials. Facilitates synchronous educational session, where staff will actively engage in meaningful learning experience. Performs quality assurance reviews to evaluate staff education and training efforts. Monitors staff progress and respond to questions regarding HIM functions and workflow. Actively participates in department and hospital performance initiatives when needed to ensure UofL success.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain privacy and confidentiality of patient protected health information (PHI).
  • Ensure that education and training initiatives are compliant with HIPAA standards.
  • Review discrepancies between staff education and tasks performance to determine progress.
  • Maintain HIM education program that is consistent and aligns with department policies and procedures through collaboration with HIM leadership.
  • Identify educational needs of HIM staff through routine staff performance assessments to maintain a high level of proficiency and increased productivity.
  • Develops education and training materials that include HIM best practices and meet existing and future needs of HIM Department.
  • Responsible for new hire orientation, continuing education, cross-training and professional development program.
  • Work collaboratively with HIM leadership to develop education plans that incorporate all HIM functions and related systems.
  • Coordinate the department Internship and Externship programs by working closely with HIM leadership.
  • Monitor changes in state and federal laws to ensure regulatory compliance with education materials and job aides.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High school graduate or GED required.
  • Electronic Medical records experience required.
  • Prior experience with Cerner PowerChart preferred.
  • RHIA, RHIT or 7 years HIM equivalent job experience required.
  • 5 years of experience in Health Information Management required.
  • Prior experience with Joint Commission and HIPAA standards preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Must be proficient in Word and Excel.
  • Must be dependable, professional and a team player.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to abstract data and to perform data entry tasks.
  • Ability to multi-task and be flexible with job demands.
  • Energetic, motivated individual that connects well with people.
  • Ability to work in a high pressure or changing environment, and exercise good judgment to resolve problems in the absence of formalized procedures and guidelines.
