Location: 530 South Jackson Street   Louisville KY 40202

Shift Options:  11a-1130p  Full Time

 

 

Job Summary

The Lab Assistant II in Microbiology shall: have a sound knowledge of processing and planting all types of Microbiology and Serology/ Immunology specimens with attention to detail and accuracy; maintain testing equipment in Microbiology and perform basic troubleshooting and quality control under the supervision of a Technologist; enter results into the Laboratory Information System under the supervision of a Technologist; interact courteously and professionally with all customers; respect patient’s rights; actively support the policies of the Laboratory and hospital.

 

Responsibilities

  • Performs specimen processing in the department both manually and with the automated Microbiology system.
  • Accurately reports patient results in the Laboratory Information System.
  • Performs records and analyzes Quality Control as designated by the department Supervisor.
  • Maintains and performs basic troubleshooting on instrumentation in the department.
  • Makes suggestions for improvements of policies and procedures in compliance with NCCLS guidelines.
  • Teaches correct protocols to students and new hospital or laboratory employees.
  • Participates in continuing education programs for the upgrade of educational experience.
  • Performs computer and clerical duties; filing, entering reports, assisting with audit trails and ordering tests as necessary.
  • Controls inventory ordering and supplies to maintain adequate stock.
  • Develops and assists in writing policies, procedures and training documents for specimen processing.
  • Follow standards of safety dictated by the laboratory, the hospital and regulatory agencies.
  • Follows all compliance and medical necessity policies.
  • Contributes to the efficient operation of the laboratory.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by laboratory leadership.

 

Required Qualifications

  • HS Diploma or equivalent
  • Clerical and computer skills

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in laboratory specimen processing
