The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) works collaboratively with Nursing Leadership and the Nursing Education Department to elevate the practice of nursing within the service line of care. This includes incorporating evidence based practice, quality and process improvements, education, competency and in servicing, facilitating orientation and onboarding of new employees and other activities designed to support both nursing and clinical practice across University of Louisville (UofL) Hospital. The goal of the CNS is to improve the quality of patient care and nursing practice with resultant improved patient outcomes.  The CNS is responsive to evolving needs across the system, and serves as a clinical expert, proficient educator, consultant, researcher, change agent, leader and interdisciplinary collaborator in a specific area of responsibility. The CNS fosters empowerment of clinical staff by providing clinical instruction and support to assure clinical competency of staff and safe, effective delivery of patient care, incorporating evidence based practice (EBP), nursing research, and appropriate skill set standards and recommended practices.  The CNS actively participates in quality improvement (QI), EBP, and nursing research processes across the system.  The position supports core behaviors, standards, values, and missions of the UofL Hospital, accrediting bodies, and the profession of Nursing as a professional role model.


Works under the direction of the Nursing service line leader. Works collaboratively with Education, utilizing established structures and processes, supporting the goals and initiatives of the service line, education and the organization.


Clinical Expert

  • Serves as a role model to Nursing Staff in the delivery of excellent patient care for designated patient populations.
  • Collaborates with Nursing, Education and interdisciplinary colleagues to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate strategies to address complex patient care issues.
  • Assists staff with clinical decision making and priority setting.
  • Collaborates with Clinical Leadership to develop, evaluate, and implement standards of patient care /care planning and professional practice with attention to quality, service, cost effectiveness, comfort, safety, age specific implications, and cultural competence.
  • Serves as a patient /family advocate, incorporating respect for and acknowledgement of cultural diversity and individual patient needs.
  • Maintains and integrates current evidenced-based knowledge into patient care processes
  • Promotes an environment consistent with the core concepts of Patient and Family Centered Care, and demonstration of the core values.




          Facilitates the ongoing education and professional development of the nursing staff and students.

         Coordinates orientation of newly hired nursing department employees to the nursing service line.

  • In collaboration with Nursing Education, plans, prepares, and maintains materials for use in competency based educational programs, utilizing current standards, regulations, and validated evidenced based research as related to the nursing service line.
  • Collaborates in the development or modification of patient education materials as appropriate as related to the nursing service line.
  • In collaboration with Nursing Education, coordinates learning needs assessments for clinical staff and develops programs and competency strategies to address identified learning needs as related to the nursing service line. 
  • Incorporates principles of adult learning in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of education and competency programs.
  • Communicates effectively in visual, oral, and written form and demonstrates effective presentation skills.
  • Assists in the fiscal and administrative operations through cost effective use of resources, analysis of ROI, and participation in revenue generating activities for the department and the organization.
  • Cooperates with Nursing Education in the facilitation of departmental orientation and conducts a variety of in-service, orientation, and educational programs for clinical staff to meet competency assessment requirements in accordance with departmental objectives and accreditation standards, including yet necessarily limited to: Initial and Ongoing Competencies; Core Curriculum; Required Certification Courses and Professional Development.


Consultant/Interdisciplinary Collaborator/Facilitator

  • Serves as an educational consultant and/or facilitator to hospital committees, task forces, and projects.
  • Serves as a consultant to clinical staff, physicians, administration, Nursing school programs, and the public for clinical education and the clinical nursing care of hospitalized patients.
  • Role model customer service.
  • Collaborates with Nursing Education to support clinical student rotations as related to the nursing service line.



  • Expands the scientific base of nursing practice by initiating and/or participating in continuous quality improvement and evidence based practice activities and/or research studies.
  • Critically analyzes current nursing research methods and outcomes for inclusion in the curriculum content of education to support patient care.
  • Incorporates current research findings into educational activities.
  • Supports and demonstrates validated evidence based practice.
  • Disseminates research findings though clinical presentations and publications.
  • Challenges existing practice when not aligned with current best practices.

Development of self and others

o   Fosters attainment of professional certification for bedside nursing staff through mentoring, classes, programs, and study groups.

o   Promotes concept of lifelong learning.

  • Identifies and supports needed opportunities for change.
  • Develops programs that assist attendees to embrace change as a desired process to support best practice.

Education / Accreditation / Licensure (required & preferred):


  • Unrestricted RN license in the state of Kentucky
  • BSN
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing within specified time upon hire.



National Clinical Nurse Specialty Certification (e.g. CCNS, ACCNS-AG, ACNS-BC, AGCNS-BC)


           Experience (required and preferred):


  • Minimum of 5 years as a Registered Nurse in specified specialty area
  • Proficiency in EBP, Quality Improvement and Project Management
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software applications
  • Proficiency in both verbal and written communication


  • Previous experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist
  • Previous experience in education and teaching
  • Previous experience in program planning and management, competency assessment, promoting and supporting change initiatives
