  • Overview

    Reporting to the Associate Vice President of Revenue Cycle, responsible to support and promote professional coding and charge capture services throughout the organization.  This position will manage the daily operations of the coding department and the charge capture process for the University of Louisville Physicians Group.  The Coding Manager is responsible for monitoring the quality of coding and charge capture, abstraction, data entry and compliance with external regulatory agency requirements with respect to proper coding, documentation, abstracting and reporting. 

    The ideal candidate will have a collaborative nature and be capable of providing coding and charge capture education of physicians, NPPs and other clinicians, provide guidance with regard to policies and procedures needed to help ensure improved and compliant documentation, coding and billing, reduce charge lag and coding related denials, make recommendations and support those recommendations with authoritative guidance, etc.

    Responsibilities

    • Manage the daily operations of the Coding and Charge Capture team.
    • Responsible for partnering with supervisor leaders in planning, assigning and directing work of staff for efficient work flow.
    • Enhance and/or develop coding and charge capture protocols (including performance criteria, such as productivity and qualitative metrics, code change management standards, etc.), to help improve deliverables of the Coding and Charge Capture team.
    • Respond to queries from coders or providers on complex records and keep coders and stakeholders informed on coding industry updates and changes.
    • Comply and communicate deficiencies that impact the billing process.
    • Partner with Coding and Compliance to educate staff and faculty on payer specific coding policies and coding denials management.
    • Other related duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    • Education – Bachelor Degree and minimum of seven years job-related experience. Management experience of two or more employees experience required.
    • Medical office coding proficiency in CPT, ICD-10-CM and HCPCS Coding Systems.
    • Physician practice audit knowledge and experience preferred.
    • Specific knowledge of physician billing, coding and documentation regulations and guidelines.
    • Certification – Must have one or more (preferably more) of the following certifications for consideration:
      • AHMA
        • CCS-P (Certified Coding Physician Office Training)
        • CCS (Certified Coding Specialist)
      • AAPC
        • CPC (Certified Professional Coder) – MINIMUM REQUIRED
        • CPC-H (Certified Professional Coder – Hospital)
        • CPMA (Certified Professional Medical Auditor)
      • ACHAE
        • CHCA (Certified Health Care Auditor)
        • CHCAS (Certified Health Care Auditor Surgery)
      • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to present information and respond effectively in a professional manner.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS ABILITIES

    • Preferred – Medical coding education experience, CPC-I, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, knowledge of AllScripts EMR and GE Centricity Business billing system, broad knowledge of information systems, managed care contracting, revenue cycle, process improvement and management of others.
    • Coding and reviewing patient care documentation for billing purposes.
    • Understanding of healthcare terminology.
    • Familiarity of interdepartmental interactions as it relates to revenue cycle.
    • Understanding of Medical Group operations.
    • Computer Literacy – Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), Adobe and Compliance 360° (preferred).
    • Familiarity and working knowledge of Electronic Medical Record environments.
    • Familiarity and working knowledge of Practice Management Systems (billing).
    • Troubleshooting/Analysis/Problem Solving/detail-oriented.
    • Motivated self-starter capable of working under minimal supervision.
    • Customer service oriented.
    • Ability to develop education materials and to conduct live one-on-one and/or group training.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    • Must be flexible to meet with physicians before and after normal work hours.
    • Office setting with computer and other reference materials available.
    • Ability to sit for long periods of time and utilize computer equipment.
    • Limited heavy lifting of documentation and other office materials.
