The Patient Observation Aide provides direct patient care to an acutely suicidal, homicidal, or confused patient on a 1:1 or 1:2 basis under the direction of the Registered Nurse.
LIST THE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS PERFORMED BY THIS POSITION
Responds appropriately in lifesaving situations.
Measures and documents intake and output, heights and weights, and vital signs.
Documents restraint usage as directed by RN
Collects urine, stool, sputum specimens using RED rule and transports to lab as necessary.
Performs and documents point-of-care testing.
Performs and documents patient mobility and exercise, and comfort, rest, and sleep care needs.
Performs and documents patient hygiene, grooming, and dressing, skin and nail care, dietary, and toileting and elimination needs.
Assists with admitting, physical examination, transferring, and discharging patients.
Monitors for patient safety, including documentation every 15 minutes on suicidal or homicidal patients.
Provides for a safe environment for suicidal patients, clearing the room of possible items which could cause harm.
Maintains a clean and uncluttered room environment
Communicates therapeutically with patient and family
Safely and correctly operates equipment (i.e. beds, wheelchairs, stretchers, hypo/hyperthermia unit, mechanical lifts, bed scales).
Receives oncoming and gives off going reports, and notifies nurse with any change in condition.
Adheres to Universal precautions, infection control, OSHA, and other regulatory policies and procedures. Maintains safe work practices and follows facility safety procedures.
Performs other duties as assigned.
