The Burn Educator and Resource Nurse (BERN) is responsible for responding to burn activations within the ED, as well as assisting with the care of burn patients while in the ED whether admitted or treated and released. Additionally, the BERN will also assist with outpatient burn follow up care.  The Burn Educator and Resource RN will work collaboratively with the ED staff to coordinate and facilitate optimal care of the thermally injured patient as guided by the American Burn Association (ABA) criteria. This RN acts as the liaison between ED, Burn Unit, Charge RN, house supervisor, access center and Burn Clinic to coordinate efficient through put and safe care and is accountable at each part of the process. During the time this RN isn’t facilitating the immediate care of burn patients during activation, the Burn Educator and Resource RN will round on burn patients in the ED/Burn Unit/Burn Clinic, assist with transport of the burn patient, participate in the performance improvement process/multidisciplinary rounds, and Burn Program Development meetings, actively provide educational opportunities such as discussing burn care, wound care, resuscitation, etc., and is available to assist staff as needed. This RN will act as family liaison to promote patient-family centered care.   Additionally, the BERN will serve as the Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) coordinator and participate with pre-hospital and post-hospital education.
